'Maths takes you there' - a new numeracy website
The 'Maths takes you there' website provides ideas, materials and guidance to help you and your learners.
Useful ‘youtube’ clips to pep up a numeracy session:
THE CONFERENCE
What you had to say about the conference
When you speak, we listen! Your feedback is always of value to us, so here is a quick rundown on what you had to say:
-
96% of you said that the pre-course information was good or excellent
-
97% of you said that the venue was good or excellent
-
93% of you said that the key note speaker was good or excellent
-
91% of you said that the relevance to your own context was excellent or good
What we could do better
- Some of you would have liked the opportunity to book your workshops before the day – we’re working on it!!
- You all clearly enjoyed the afternoon carousel activities, but some of you felt a little rushed and would have liked more time at each activity. We will build that into planning at future events
- Some of you could not see the screen during the key note speech, so sorry about that
Some of your quotes:
Find out more about Simon Singh
If you came to our conference and enjoyed Simon Singh’s key note speech, or if you would like to find our more about him, then go to:
http://www.simonsingh.net/. His website holds a host of resources which you could use or adapt for learners.
My favourite is the mathematical jokes page, how shallow am I?
My favourite joke comes from Ian Hammond:
“Did you hear about the statistician who used to go out with a lot of girls but didn't like to talk about it?”
“He was a discrete data”
Do you know what your numeracy targets are?
If you are a college, the LSC will have allocated you a target for numeracy enrolment and achievement. If you do not know what this is, then have a chat with your LSC contract manager. If they don’t know, they will know a man who does!
Some ideas for using dice in numeracy
There are a variety of dice on the market which can be used to support numeracy activities. They come in different sizes and are available with numbers or blank. Here are some ideas to get you thinking about how you could use dice with your learners.
1 4 Rules exercises:
Throw dice using 2 numbers and one symbol, do sum.
Times table practice.
Multiplication practice: Give 1-36 grid, throw 2 dice, cross off the answer by multiplying, next player can turn over any one of the dice and cross off that number, loser is unable to cross off.
Peers make sums for each other
Learners get 2 numbers and explore what they can do
2 Area
3 Calculations/reverse operations
4 Comparisons i.e. comparing different groups of numbers
5 Countdown
Roll 3 for target (or set target), roll all and use to get as near target as possible, set time limit.
6 Dice
7 Dice Dartboard
8 Factors
9 Fractions
Roll 4 dice (with numbers) and find: biggest fraction, smallest fraction, nearest to ½, add them, subtract them, order them
10 Greater than or Less than
i.e. 10 more, 10 less
11 Making different digit numbers
12 Number bonds to 10/20 etc
13 Number sequence
14 Numbers in words, letter forming
15 Order of operations
16 Percentages
17 Positive/negative calculations
18 Powers
19 Prime Numbers
20 Probability of throwing 2x1 etc
Probability races, throw 2 dice and multiply, even move forward and odd move back
21 Ordering numbers
Put minus numbers in order
22Range
Work out Range
23 Ratio
Of numbers thrown, of colours e.g. ratio of red to green
24Shapes
25 Spoof
26 Throw as dice and make “biggest” number and “smallest” number
27 Throw dice and get percentage of each colour
28 True or False
29 Use symbol dice to discuss language of maths
30 Volume
31 Square Number
Find a square number
32 Associative relationships
33Inequalities
34 Statements & Equations
Make up maths statements using “=”, Match with problems, make up equations
35 Have an answer and keep shaking dice until someone gets it!
36 Games:
Yahtzee: Yahtzee is a dice game. The object of the game is to score the most points by rolling five dice to make certain combinations. The dice can be rolled up to three times in a turn to try to make one of the thirteen possible scoring combinations. A game of Yahtzee consists of thirteen rounds during which the player chooses which scoring combination is to be used in that round. Once a combination has been used in the game, it cannot be used again. (see Wikipedia for more detail)
37 Estimating
38 Handling data
39 Place value
40 Id’ing numbers (for Discalculia students)

Roll numbers and plot as co-ordinates on graph
TRAINING
As part of our Skills for Life at Work Project (formerly Basic Skills in the Workplace) we are now offering the following courses. Under this project we are able to offer 2 days of one-off training or one longer course free of charge to professionals delivering or supporting skills for life learningin the workplace through a Train to Gain contract. This is on the condition that you live or work in the South East of England and that assignments are submitted. Individuals who have already accessed their quota of training under this project or whodo not fit into these criteria will still be able to attend but will be charged for their attendance.
We are now also offering a few free places on our 1 day OCN CPD courses to staff employed to deliver SfL, but not necessarily in the workplace, for people working in the voluntary/community sector (note should accreditation be required this will require a payment of £15). Please contact us before booking to check that these places are still available.
