Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to our June Newsletter.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for the support and encouragement you have given myself and the ESSU over the past 8 years. It has been a great privilege to work with so many talented and committed professionals. I have learned a great deal from you all during my time at the unit.
I have great confidence in the ESSU team, who have worked tirelessly over the past 8 years and I am convinced that they have a great future in continuing their valuable work. I do hope that you will continue to support them
We all know that times are likely to be tough for us all in FE in the future, but I must say that having met so many people in the world of 'Skills for Life' who have incredible tenacity, determination and conviction about what they do, I can only feel confident that , in a world of budget cuts and global recession, if anyone will survive you can in your roles within SfL. The work you all do is so valuable and I wish you well in continuing that work successfully into the future.
I will continue to keep my ESSU email on: debbymiller@essu.org and would love to see anyone who braves it to Australia.
Debby
As I am sure you will all understand, all of us here at the ESSU are going to really miss Debby, on a professional and personal basis. The ESSU has been Debby’s ‘baby’ for the last 8 ½ years and we are going to do everything we possibly can to ensure that we enable the unit to develop and grow during her absence. Debby’s shoes are going to be extremely difficult to fill, but we have some very exciting times ahead and I am sure it is going to keep us very busy over the next 2 years.

DfE spending cuts
As part of the coalition government’s deficit reduction plans, each department has set out their contribution to the £6.2 billion worth of cuts that need to be found this year.
The Department for Education released a letter from Secretary of State Michael Gove stating that schools, children's centres and 16 to 19 provision will be protected for this year. Schools will also receive all their allotted educational maintenance allowance funding along with existing money for one-to-one tuition.
The Chancellor, George Osborne, has released a consultation document inviting the public, think-tanks, unions and professional bodies to have their say on how government spending should work in future years. Click hereto read the letter from Michael Gove in full.
New qualifications for people delivering career guidance to adults
LLUK has been working with those in the career guidance sector to develop a set of new qualifications. Aimed at those delivering career guidance to adults in England, this framework of three new qualifications will help to train staff and encourage progression within the sector.
Although the qualification framework has primarily been developed to meet the needs of practitioners who will be working within the new Adult Advancement and Careers Service in England, the nature of the units mean that they could be used much more widely and are appropriate for anyone providing career information, advice or guidance.
The units of all the qualifications on the framework are now available on the Qualifications and Credit Framework. To find out more visit www.lluk.org/4341.htm.

Tutors expert column: Basic Skills & ICT
The use of computers to develop literacy, numeracy and ESOL skills of adults learners was recommended in 'Fresh Start, 1999' (Moser Report) as being ' one of the most effective - and attractive - ways of enhancing one's basic skills'. However, there is still a degree of apprehension in how to use this rapidly evolving technology effectively with adults who already struggle with confidence issues. This article gives a general overview of the issues as well giving some ideas and strategies that you as a tutor can use.

Functional skills in Apprenticeships
An information resource from the Functional Skills Support Programme that will help you plan and deliver your functional skills provision for Apprentices.
Functional skills in Apprenticeships give learners the opportunity to develop, practise and apply skills in meaningful workplace contexts, thereby improving their employability and career opportunities. They will also help meet the needs of business for an increasingly skilled workforce. This publication is for practitioners who support and enable the learning of functional skills in Apprenticeships. It will be relevant to functional skills specialists, vocational specialists and Co-ordinators in work-based learning providers and colleges that offer Apprenticeship training. It will help you to consider the practicalities of delivering functional skills in Apprenticeships, how you can highlight their relevance to the workplace, and how you can make learning relevant and rewarding for learners and employers. Question/Answer:
A new section to our newsletter … what do you want information on, can we source it for you? We are increasingly aware that our newsletter is a source of information for many providers. If you would like to know something that you think would also be useful for other providers, please ask away and we will do our best to help you. Email suemoss@essu.org
A Teaching Practice Resource/Idea:
A really simple and effective teaching resource from Teresa Maria-Stiles - thank you for sharing it.
Fractions: Use paper plates and cut them in half, quarters, eigths and sixteenths, leaving one plate complete to represent a whole. By putting the two halves on top of the whole plate, then the quarters on top of the two halves, then the eigths on top of the quarters, and so on, learners can manipulate and visualise concepts such as fractions, fraction equivalence, simplifiying, division, and to understand, for example, the difference between multiplication and division and the use of decimals to represent fractions.
Do you have a teaching idea/resource that you would like to share via future newsletters and at our network meetings? Email suemoss@essu.org
