True Life Stories

Jean:
"I am married with three children. I left school at fifteen and worked in a factory ever since. I attended a Family Learning Course and caught the learning bug. Since then I have gained GCSEs in English and Maths. I am now studying to be a midwife and delivered my first baby last week."

Peter:
” A few years ago I had a stroke, which left me unable to write. I have worked very hard and achieved a City & Guilds qualification. I am now fully confident with my writing and am working towards a higher qualification”

Steve:
”I was unemployed for 12 years, when an advisor persuaded me to go on a course to help me improve my English and Maths. I didn’t want to go, but once I was there I enjoyed every minute. The staff were really helpful. I now work as a gardener and I am improving my maths by studying at home through learndirect”

Susan:
”I wasted my time at school and left without any qualifications. A few years ago I joined a Basic English course and am now on an Access course. The best thing about learning is being with like-minded people. I have made some new friends who are in the same boat as me, working hard to make a difference for our families and ourselves
