- understand and be able to demonstrate appropriate teaching and learning approaches
- be able to plan sessions to support underpinning skills
- understand how to cater for learners with a range of abilities and needs
- have identified strategies to motivate learners
- understand how to use a range of assessment and record keeping methods in order to support candidates
Intended Audience for Course
This course is intended for work-based assessors who are delivering underpinning skills aas part of their delivery. It is also suitable for anyone wishing to enter teaching or training in the Lifelong Learning sector to include those working in community venues and colleges.
The qualification is intended as an introduction to the role. It would also suit graduates or those with appropriate vocational experience who are interested in entering the teaching profession. It is relevant for those with specialist or technical skills who have teaching or training as part of their current or future roles.
The Qualification
It is now a requirement of the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills that all staff in the post-16 years Lifelong Learning sector, who have roles in teaching, training or tutoring and who do not have a teaching qualification, to work towards gaining Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status.
This initial qualification will be seen both as leading to a threshold ‘licence to practise’ status and the first step on the path to achieving full Qualified Teacher Status.
Assessment
This course requires 30 hours of face-to-face delivery and 30 hours of non-contact time. There is no examination but you will be expected to carry out a microteaching session, and there are 4 assignments which will be marked by your tutor.
Progression
This course fits into the new teacher training structure. Next steps would be:
Certificate for Teachers in a role of limited responsibility:
Diploma for teachers in a full teaching role
- follows on from the Certificate
- is a level 5 course
- 45 credits
Refreshments Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
