The Essential Skills Support Unit

The Essential Skills Support Unit is supported by your Local Learning and Skills Council. Essential skills is the ability to read, write and speak in English and use mathematics at a level necessary to function and progress at work and in society in general. The aim of the unit is to support organisations currently provide essential skills learning opportunities to adults. It can also help organisations who would like to establish new learning opportunities in this field.

According to the most recent statistics published by the DfES in ‘The Skills for Life Survey: A national needs and impact survey of Literacy, Numeracy and ICT skills’ (2003), there are approximately 17.8 million adults of working age nationally who have gaps in their literacy skills and 23.8 million adults with gaps in their numeracy skills.
