The Essential Skills Support Unit The Essential Skills Support Unit is supported by your Local Learning
and Skills Council. Essential skills is the ability to read, write and
speak in English and use mathematics at a level necessary to function
and progress at work and in society in general. The aim of the unit
is to support organisations currently provide essential skills learning
opportunities to adults. It can also help organisations who would like
to establish new learning opportunities in this field. |

| The Top Ten Achievements of the Essential Skills Support Unit | |
| 1 | Delivery of high quality training – to over 1300 individuals within a 9 month period with a 100% satisfaction rate. |
| 2 | Growth of network groups to ensure effective collaboration and cohesion across geographical areas. |
| 3 | Building capacity by establishing over 107 new learning opportunities to 588 learners up to the end of August. |
| 4 | Delivery of high quality information and advice sessions to 580 individuals. |
| 5 | Bids supported to the value of £1, 543,438 to enable an improved service for Essential Skills across the area. |
| 6 | Development of 11, Level 3 modules to support providers across the county and to enable tutors to become more effective practitioners and to prepare for Level 4. |
| 7 | The provision of tutor support resources, including 35 Step Up courses quality assured, 5 of which have been accredited through OCN. |
| 8 | Re-development of the ESSU website to provide expanded support and awareness raising, to include new sections, including business and ‘Check your Own Skills’ and with 197,000 hits over a 9 month period. |
| 9 | Involvement in a range of National projects, including KPMG/CTAD and NIACE. This has involved bringing providers together to work in genuine partnership, e.g. in liaising with providers across the area to develop a SEEDA and NHS bid between 18 providers. |
| 10 | Responsive to LSC regarding additional activities, including making suggestions for using discretionary underspend and creation of a successful proposal to provide resources with associated training to 50 workbased learning providers, specialist colleges and community organisations. |
